October Seasonal Eating

The soft fruit stawberries, figs etc would be finished  and also most types of beans. a few weeks ago would have been the time to freeze or salt them. The frozen soft can be used for jams or pies.

Menu October 1st Week ( 4th to 10th )
Menu Monday
Lamb cutlets
–onions, beans and mushrooms–coconut cake–coffee
Menu Tuesday
Three types pork sausage—mash potatoes with onions—Swede—figs and cream—coffee
Menu Wednesday
Cottage Pie ( mince beef)—sweet corn—parsnip—carrot cake—coffee
Menu Thursday
Thick Vegetable Soup (with pork hock stock)—(kohlrabi, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, tarragon, thyme, oregano and parsley—bread pudding—coffee
Menu Friday
Lasagna–sweet corn—apple pie—coffee.
 

The tomatoes and cucumbers are from the Nicolson Bros., Le Gele. 
Also cherry toms, peppers and aubergine from Langlois Bros, Vazon, who have a roadside hedge veg coming around from Albecq
.

Menu Saturday
Rib Steak—Dauphinoise potatoes, courgette frit, beans, onion rings and mushrooms—Cheese and biscuits—coffee
Menu Sunday
Roast Beef and Yorkshire pudding—roast potatoes, roast parsnip roast small onions, (mixed parsnip, carrot, swede) and calibres—ice cream 

I have started sprouts now rather than in August, as l like them when it is a little colder. Also kale which cooks like savoy cabbage is around and I like it cooked with onions.

Menus October 2nd Week ( 11th to 17th )
Menu Monday
Bacon, eggs, black pudding, fried toast and Saute potatoes with bread—raspberry and cream—coffee
Menu Tuesday
Bass—chips, cauliflower cheese and beans—chocolate cake—coffee
Menu Wednesday
Beef Burgers—chunky chips and sweet corn—cheese and biscuits—coffee
Menu Thursday
Three sausage—Saute potatoes, ratatouille ( Aubergine, courgette, onion, tomatoes, peppers, garlic, mushroom, herbs and seasoning
Menu Friday
Pork chops—mash potatoes, beans, carrots and onion—summer fruit pie—coffee
Menu Saturday
Cornish Pastie—boiled potatoes, mushroom, beans and roasted peppers—apple pie—coffee
Menu Sunday
Roast Lamb with mint sauce—roast potatoes, roast onion, roast, swede mixed veg ( carrots, swede and parsnip) and sprouts—tart lemon—coffee.

The Dunbar potatoes are from Roy Lesbirel, who also runs the Northside Chip Shop and he uses his own potatoes.

The end of the season for sweet corn and now is the time to freeze some for the winter.
There are lots of butternut squash and other ones around and one way of cooking them is to, cut in half and take the inside out and fill with mushrooms, mince, onions and seasoning. Then wrap with foil and bake in oven.

Menus October 3rd week ( 18th to 24th )

Shepherd’s Pie—sweet corn (from frozen)—cheese cake—coffee
Menu Wednesday
Chicken Curry with rice—ice cream—coffee
Menu Thursday
Chicken and Mushroom Pie—carrots and calibres—apple and blackberry pie with cream
Menu Friday
Vegetarian Cornish Pastie—mash potatoes and mushrooms—Victoria sponge—coffee
Menu Saturday
batttered fish and chips , mushrooms and sweetcorn –raspberry cheese cake–coffee.
Menu Sunday 
Wood Pigeon Pie—mash potatoes and carrots—bread pudding—coffee

The shooting season started on October 1st and there are wood pigeons and rabbit around now. 

There are some award winning cheeses, Fort Grey ( blue cheese) and Tomlins Cotein  ( white goats cheese) from Torteval Cheese  Fenella Maddison (Artisan Cheese Maker) cheese@cwgsy.net

Vegetable soup using leftovers adding more vegetables of choose with bread—coconut cake—coffee
Menu Tuesday
Steak and kidney pie—mash potatoes, mushrooms and carrots—rice pudding—coffee
Menu Wednesday
Sausage, bacon, scrambled eggs with onions, Saute potatoes and ratatouille—cheese and biscuits—coffee
Menu Thursday
Belly Pork with apple sauce—carrots, fr. Sweet corn and beetroot—cheese and biscuits—coffee
Menu Friday
Sausage, bacon, black pudding, poached egg and croutons—raspberry cheese cake—coffee
Menu Saturday
Market fish of the day—cauliflower with cheese—courgettes—blackberry pie—coffee
Menu Sunday
Roast pork with apple sauce- take off crackling oil and put in oven—roast potatoes, mixed veg, carrots and calabraise–Cheese and biscuits

All this fruit and veg can be brought at local shops like Co. Op, Forest Stores, Hedge veg and Farmers Markets. There are a few  local growers and one of them are  John & Keith Tostevin, who have a Roadside stall and also sell on Saturday’s at the Rue de Manoir, Forest.
